This week is Fire Prevention Week, ending with Fire Prevention Day on October 9.
This might be a concept which was launched and is primarily celebrated in the United States and Canada, but the messages about preventing fires are the same all over the world and we fully support those sentiments.
The first proclamation of Fire Prevention Week in the United States was in 1925 by President Calvin Coolidge, making this year the 90th anniversary of his announcement.
This prevention week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The fire killed hundreds of people and destroyed 3.3 square miles of land and property.
The event is the equivalent of the Great Fire of London in September 1666 – namely a landmark event which is still talked about today as an example of a terrible fire disaster, which we must all work hard not to repeat.
According to the Museum of London the Great Fire lasted five days, destroying a third of London and making 100,000 people homeless. It took about 50 years to rebuild the city.
The Chicago Fire cost 15,000 lives. We endorse President Coolidge’s 1925 announcement that the “greater part” of the fire could and ought to have been prevented.
